What are the causes of chronic pelvic pain?

Chronic pelvic pain is related to a number of internal and reproductive conditions or it can be a condition in itself. Women are more likely than men to suffer from chronic pelvic painSome of the conditions which can cause pelvic pain include:

How is abdominal and pelvic pain diagnosed?

Diagnosing chronic pelvic pain is often challenging because of the variety of potential conditions. MDSG will begin diagnosis with a patient history and a thorough examination, including a pelvic exam. We may order further screening and testing including blood tests, ultrasound or CT scans, or hysteroscopy to look inside the uterus. If a gastrointestinal tract problem is suspected, referral can be made to a doctor who can perform the appropriate testing.

How is chronic pelvic pain treated?

The first thing that MDSG will need to do is to determine the cause of the pain. When the responsible condition is diagnosed, we will create a treatment plan to address that issue. For example, if the pain is due to endometriosis, we may prescribe medication to regulate your hormones or perform an endometrial ablation to reduce and remove the excess endometrial tissue. If an underlying condition is not identified, MDSG will treat the symptoms to provide relief from discomfort and pain. This could include medication such as pain-killers, antibiotics, or antidepressants. Hormone treatments may also be effective. We may suggest physical therapy, neurostimulation or trigger point injections. In some cases, surgery could resolve the condition. If possible surgery is minimally invasive, carried out through a laparoscopic procedure. Whatever the condition, MDSG will provide you with the best possible treatment to address your condition and discomfort. We will provide you with thorough examinations and help you to understand your condition and answer any questions.
